Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have rejected Korea Electric Power's proposal of a 25 trillion won ($18.59 billion) prepayment to ensure additional power supplies for semiconductor production sites can be met, according to media reports.
Kepco had floated the idea and was in negotiations with Samsung Electronics, including over terms such as interest payments that would have been above those on offer from government bonds on Sept. 3, based on a report by Korea's Chosun News.
The two companies told Kepco that they would struggle to accept the proposal after some internal discussion, Reuters said, based on a document shared by the office of lawmaker Lee Chui-gyu.
An official from one of the two companies told Reuters, on the condition of anonymity, that there were doubts over the long-term demand for semiconductors, potentially making an advance payment of this size unnecessary.
The two companies declined Reuters' request for comment.has sent a request for comment to Samsung Electronics and has been unable to reach SK Hynix.
Chui-gyu said that Kepco had informed him that it did not plan to approach any other companies to seek advance payments, Aju News reported.
The lawmaker said that finding financing mechanisms enabling grid-level investment to meet new industrial demand should be a priority to protect the economy, the Aju News report said.
