The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 79 points mid-morning Wednesday with the industrials and energy sectors leading gains.
The industrials sector was up 1%, while energy climbed 1.4% higher.
Information technology and materials fell 0.4% each.
In other news, Canada on Tuesday announced targeted tariffs against the US, that would impact some C$27.6 billion in US imports, after trade talks between the two countries collapsed and new US tariffs came into effect. The US was weighing more trade measures against Canada, Bloomberg reported.
In stocks, National Bank (NA.TO) shares fell 5% to C$211.34 at last look after it reported third-quarter earnings that beat forecasts.
