The S&P/TSX Composite Index extended its losses Thursday morning, falling 340 points to the lowest in five weeks, as shares in the base metal and energy sectors dropped.
Base metals was the worst performing sector, shedding 5.9%, as copper prices tumbled. Precious metal commodity prices also fell sharply.
The energy sector was also in the red, down 0.4%, even as Brent crude oil prices held above $100 per barrel.
Industrials rose 0.4% while information technology rose 0.2%.
In stocks, Enbridge (ENB.TO) shares were down 3.5% to CA$66.83 after announcing Wednesday afternoon it was acquiring Tallgrass Energy's crude oil business for $2.55 billion. The transaction is expected to close later this year. Enbridge also plans to raise CA$2.6 billion in an offering of 38.9 million prices priced at CA$66.85 each.
