S&P/TSX Composite Index Down 145 Points Mid-Morning Thursday, With Financials The Worst Performer

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 145 points mid-morning Thursday, extending losses below a recent record high as the financials and healthcare sectors posted the heaviest losses.

Financials fell 1.5%, followed by the healthcare sector, which was 1.3% lower. Bank and insurance stocks were lower on last look, with CIBC (CM.TO) slipping 4.5%. The bank had reported a third-quarter earnings beat earlier in the morning. Also lower were TD Bank (TD.TO) and RBC (RY.TO), both of which also reported earnings beats.

Information technology, up 2.6%, saw the biggest gains. Technology stocks also rose, boosted by Nvidia's earnings beat and robust revenue guidance.

Quarterhill to Raise $35 Million in Private Placement of Shares

Quarterhill (QTRH.TO) plans to raise $35 million in a private placement of shares, the company said after trade on Wednesday.Quarterhill will issue 14.1 million shares at $2.48 each. The underwriters have also been granted a 15% over-allotment option, which will increase proceeds by approximately $5.3 million if exercised in full.The offering is expected to close by Sept. 16.Proceeds will be used for general working purposes.Quarterhill shares closed down C$0.04 at C$2.71 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
