The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 140 points mid-morning Tuesday with healthcare and energy sectors the best performers.
Healthcare was 1.0% higher, followed by energy, which gained 0.6% on last look. Both brent and WTI crude prices were higher as US-Iran tensions continue, and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
The mining sector was the biggest decliner, down 2.2%, pulled down by lower gold and other precious metals prices.
The latest 50% US tariffs are scheduled to take effect on $20 billion of Canadian goods on Aug. 19, with negotiations between Canada and the US still continuing.
