Florida-based One Nuclear Energy has advanced its Project Amberjack small modular reactor project in Louisiana to the technical and environmental evaluation stage, it said on Tuesday.
The project is being developed as a standalone, scalable, multi-unit SMR campus targeting up to 1 GW of advanced nuclear generation capacity.
Its final capacity, reactor technology and plant configuration will be determined based on technology selection, engineering, environmental review, transmission studies, commercial arrangements, financing and the federal licensing process.
The company noted that it had secured a site and completed preliminary development work, including initial nuclear siting and constraints analyses as well as conceptual layouts for Project Amberjack.
This allows it to move from portfolio-level screening to a site-specific development program, even though it does not constitute site approval, or a final engineering determination from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
According to the company's Chief Development Officer Chris Hansmeyer, "Amberjack is the clearest expression of who One Nuclear is and why the company was created."
This also comes just a week after the company announced a separate 2.88 GW energy project in the state last week, named Project Cayman.
