The US National Weather Service forecast a widespread heat wave on Friday, expected to peak in the southern and eastern regions of the country, with the likelihood of several temperature records being broken.
The NWS early Friday issued a red flag warning for Wyoming's Glenrock, Bill, Lusk, Lance Creek, Glendo, Douglas, Torrington, Wheatland, Chugwater, Pine Bluffs, and Cheyenne, which primarily fall under the service area of PacifiCorp's Rocky Mountain Power.
In Nebraska, a similar warning was raised for Harrison, Chadron, Scottsbluff, Bridgeport, Alliance, Harrisburg, Kimball, Sidney, Rushville, Oshkosh, Arthur, Hyannis, Chappell, and Ogallala. A major part of the state falls under the service area of regional transmission organization Southwest Power Pool, with Midcontinent ISO also serving some areas.
Utah's Vernal, Manila and areas near Moab, primarily served by PacifiCorp's Rocky Mountain Power, were also covered under a red flag warning watch.
Affected areas in Colorado include Craig, Steamboat Springs, Rangely, Meeker, Vail, Rifle, Grand Junction, Buena Vista, Aspen, Montrose, Gunnison, Durango, Cortez, Pagosa Springs, Nucla, Lake City, Alamosa, Canon City, Salida, Saguache, Leadville, Creede, Wolf Creek Pass, and San Luis. The state is primarily served by Xcel Energy (XEL) and Black Hills (BKH) unit Black Hills Energy.
The NWS issued a flood warning for Missouri's Grant Ciy, Bethany, Trenton, Kirksville, Macon, Chillicothe, Carrollton, St Joseph, Butler, Nevada, Rock Port, Maryville, Boonville, and Columbia. Evergy (EVRG), Ameren's (AEE) Missouri unit, and Algonquin Power & Utilities (AQN) subsidiary Liberty are the major service providers in Missouri.
A flood warning was also issued for Iowa's Iowa City, Ottumwa, Des Moines, Osceola, Burlington, Clinton, Davenport, and areas near Dubuque. Berkshire Hathaway Energy unit MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy (LNT) are the major power providers in Iowa.
Areas covered under a flood warning watch in Illinois included Peru, Galesburg, Canton, Havana, Macomb, Ottawa, and areas near Kankakee. These places are primarily served by Ameren's (AEE) Illinois unit and Exelon (EXC) subsidiary ComEd.
The NWS issued a flash flood warning and a severe thunderstorm warning for areas near Muskogee in Oklahoma, while a flood warning was raised for areas near Grove. These places are primarily served by OGE Energy (OGE) unit Oklahoma Gas & Electric.
Flood warnings were also issued for small pockets of Louisiana, Indiana, and Washington.
