Equinor (EQNR) Aker BP, and Var Energi have formed a partnership to target high-impact exploration opportunities on the Norwegian continental shelf, Equinor said on Monday.
While recent years have largely focused on near-field exploration and subsea tiebacks to maximize existing infrastructure, the partners emphasize that major new standalone discoveries are vital to sustain long-term production and secure Europe's energy supplies beyond 2035, it stated.
Under this multi-year initiative, the companies will pool their data, technology, expertise, and exploration capacity to mitigate the high geological uncertainties and capital requirements associated with frontier prospects, as per the statement.
The alliance plans to mature and test a portfolio of 20 to 25 exploration opportunities over the next four to five years, maintaining an ambitious target of drilling roughly five high-impact exploration wells annually, it added.
