Mitsubishi Motors (TYO:7211) and University of Tokyo startup Highlanders have signed an MOU to jointly develop humanoid robots for automotive plants and explore mass production at Mitsubishi's Kyoto Plant.
The partnership aims to tackle labor shortages and manufacturing complexity by merging Mitsubishi's production expertise with Highlanders' robotics technology, according to a statement on Thursday.
Mitsubishi plans to deploy the robots in its own facilities first, gather operational data, and evaluate future scaling, while also studying production feasibility for early 2027 using unused plant space.
Mitsubishi has already invested in Highlanders and will consider further funding to advance human-robot collaborative manufacturing.
