New orders for US durable goods fell by 4.5% in May following an increase of 8.5%, above expectations for a 5.0% decrease in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
Excluding a 14.0% decrease in transportation orders, new orders would have been up 1.3% in May after a 1.4% increase in April. Expectations were for a 0.6% gain.
Durable goods shipments rose by 1.0% after a 0.7% increase in April. Excluding transportation, shipments were up 0.8% after a 0.5% increase in the previous month.
Nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft rose by 1.6% in the month, while shipments increased by 0.3%.
