The US Energy Department is awarding $500 million to seven companies developing domestic lithium, cobalt and battery projects, Reuters reported Thursday, citing a department document.
Lilac Solutions will receive $100 million to develop a direct lithium extraction facility at Utah's Great Salt Lake, with the BMW-backed company targeting a 2028 opening and annual output of 5,000 metric tons. Jervois will also receive $100 million to build the US' only cobalt refinery in Idaho.
Nth Cycle will secure $100 million to expand battery-metal recycling through a black-mass processing facility, while Princeton NuEnergy, Arcanum Ventures and Coreshell Technologies will each receive $50 million for separate battery-material projects.
The US Department of Energy did not immediately reply to' request for comment.
