Market Chatter: Toyota, General Motors, Ford Join Coalition Asking Trump to Maintain Bar on Chinese Carmakers in US

By

Toyota Motor (TM), General Motors (GM), and Ford Motor (F) have joined a coalition of automobile makers, dealers, and suppliers in urging President Donald Trump to maintain barriers that keep Chinese cars out of the US, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing a letter to Trump from the group.

Groups that signed the letter include the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents the three carmakers and other auto manufacturers, Autos Drive America, the American Automotive Policy Council and the National Automobile Dealers Association, Bloomberg reported.

The coalition said in the letter that allowing Chinese to open a domestic facility in the US would pose security threats and economic risks and would not advance the government's targets of creating jobs, according to the report.

The letter, dated Sept. 17, was sent ahead of Trump's planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week, the report said.

General Motors and Ford did not immediately reply to a request for comment, while Toyota recommended contacting the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which also did not have an immediate response.
