Traders linked to Russian state oil company Rosneft (ROSN.ME) allegedly supplied over $2 billion in hard currency to a Kremlin-backed money-laundering network to help Russia evade Western sanctions, London's Financial Times reported Thursday, citing leaked documents.
The newspaper's investigation related to the documents showed that the money was funneled through A7, a financial technology company supported by the Russian government, allowing clients in the country to make international payments within the Swift system via front companies set up by the fintech.
Foreign currencies used for international purchases included the Chinese renminbi and United Arab Emirates dirhams, according to the leaked files.
Rosneft, Russia's Ministry of Energy and the country's Presidential press office did not immediately respond to' requests for comment.
