Indian refiners were seeking alternative cargoes to replace Russian crude oil following the signing of a US sanctions bill last week, which allows the US administration to impose up to 100% tariffs on goods from major Russian energy buyers, Bloomberg reported Monday, citing people involved in discussions.
The latest bill raises uncertainty over India's next buying cycle, which covers November delivery and is set to start in the final week of this month, according to the report.
India reportedly bought more than half of its crude imports from Russia in the previous months, as geopolitical tensions squeezed and lifted the prices of Middle Eastern supplies. It will monitor how the new US rule will apply to Russian energy buyers, sources told the news agency.
India's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
