Surging natural gas prices will transmit into Eurozone inflation faster than in previous cycles, though a boom in renewable energy is blunting the blow to household and industrial electricity bills, Reuters reported on Monday, citing the European Central Bank.
Wholesale European natural gas prices have climbed over 140% over the past year. The spike has been driven by supply constraints stemming from the Middle East conflict and depleted storage reserves across the bloc.
A study by the ECB shows that changes in wholesale gas quotes now filter through to retail gas inflation within one to three months in most euro area nations, an accelerated timeline compared with 2022.
The central bank attributes the faster transmission to structural shifts in energy markets, including more flexible pricing mechanisms and a proliferation of shorter fixed-term contracts.
ECB did not immediately reply to' request for comment.
