Asian buyers are going after Argentinian crude supplies, as uncertainty blights the Middle East become in the midst of the US-Iran war, according to a Bloomberg report on Monday, citing traders familiar with the matter.
Argentina's Medanito oil, which is similar to the West Texas Intermediate, is being sought after by refiners located across Japan, South Korea and China in recent weeks, the report said, as Asian countries look to diversify their supplies.
Asia is still a minor destination for Argentina's crude exports. Of the 215,000 barrels per day that the country has shipped so far this year, most of it was bound for the US and Chile.
Exports to Asia have averaged a record 35,000 barrels per day, five times the country's 2025 figures, according to Argentinian government data. Meanwhile, the country is boosting drilling at Medanito in the Vaca Muerta shale formation.
Medanito appeals to buyers because it is of similar quality to the WTI and avoids major shipping chokepoints, while trading at a $1 to $2 per barrel discount to the benchmark.
Argentina's Energy Secretariat did not immediately respond to' request for a comment on this story.
