Japan's retail sales expanded 0.5% year over year in June to 13 trillion yen, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Friday.
The reading missed the consensus forecast of 3.1% growth tracked by Investing.com, and compared with a 5% increase recorded in the previous month.
On a seasonally adjusted month-over-month basis, retail trade declined 4.1%, following a 1.7% rise in the prior month.
