Japan's retail sales expanded 4.0% year over year to 13.880 trillion yen in July, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Monday.
The reading beat the consensus forecast of 3.2% growth tracked by Investing.com, and compared with a 0.6% increase recorded in the previous month.
On a seasonally adjusted month-over-month basis, retail trade rose 2.4%, following a 3.9% decline in the prior month.
