Japan is considering financing from foreign banks for the construction of US natural gas power generation facilities as part of the Japan-US Strategic Investment Initiative, the country's Ministry of Finance said in a social media post on Sunday.
Financing institutions are being considered along with the Japanese government-affiliated Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance, the post said.
"Coordinated financing between JBIC and foreign banks, as well as loan guarantees provided by NEXI to foreign banks, have conventionally been implemented in various situations. Of course, as government-affiliated institutions in Japan, support from JBIC and NEXI is legally conditioned on the project benefiting Japanese companies," the post said.
Foreign financing could help ease the foreign currency procurement process for the initiative, the Ministry said. The Japanese yen is currently at its weakest versus the dollar in at least 20 years.
According to a Reuters report on Monday, the banks will help fund about $33 billion for projects related to the construction of natural gas-fired power facilities in Pennsylvania and Texas.
The projects are part of Japan's agreed $550 billion US-investment commitment as part of an agreement to reduce US tariffs on Japanese goods, the report added.
