Hawaii Legislators Pass Bill to Create Clean Fuel Standard; Governor's Signature Awaited

By

-- Hawaii's legislators sent a bill to the state's governor on Thursday that creates a Clean Fuel Standard to reward the production and use of low-carbon fuels, according to the Low Carbon Fuels Coalition.

Hawaii's move would follow the success of similar policies in California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as the April 2026 implementation of a program in New Mexico, the LCFC group stated in a press release.

The Hawaii legislation, if signed, would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2028, and include eligibility for aviation and maritime fuels.

Governor Josh Green has until July 15 to sign the bill.

Other states currently considering a clean transportation fuels standard include Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, and New York.
