Growth in Japan's Housing Starts Ease in July

New housing construction starts in Japan rose 8.2% year over year in July to 66,439 units, according to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on Monday.

The reading beat the consensus forecast of a 7.5% increase tracked by Investing.com, but slowed significantly from the 18.6% increase recorded in the previous month.

By category, owner-occupied homes rose 0.4% year over year to 17,730 units, while rental housing construction increased 10% to 30,164 units. Both grew at softer rates from 15.7% and 24.6%, respectively, in June.

Meanwhile, built-for-sale housing starts rose 14.6% year over year to 18,208 units, faster than the 14.2% growth the previous month.
