Energy Dome and Google (GOOG) signed their first bilateral commercial agreement to build a 23-megawatt/200-megawatt-hour CO2 Battery project in Ireland, advancing long-duration energy storage deployment, the companies said Tuesday.
Located in County Offaly, Ireland, the project builds on a partnership that Google and Energy Dome announced last year to scale the company's CO2 Battery technology and expand access to affordable, secure and round-the-clock carbon-free power.
The announcement follows a separate 19 MW/200 MWh Arizona project unveiled earlier this month by Energy Dome, Google and utility Salt River Project, strengthening the companies' multi-continent energy storage strategy.
Energy Dome will develop, own and operate the Irish facility. Its technology stores energy by compressing carbon dioxide with grid power and later expands the gas through a turbine to return electricity to the grid, the companies said.
Ireland views long-duration energy storage as a critical tool for securing electricity supplies, lowering system costs and supporting its target of generating 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
The project will absorb excess renewable generation during periods of oversupply and release power when demand rises, helping ease local grid congestion while improving the use of wind and solar resources, the companies added.
Located near Rhode in County Offaly, the site sits on a key transmission corridor serving Greater Dublin. Energy Dome is developing the project with Lumcloon Energy on a former peat-fired power plant site to create jobs and support regional growth.
The project has secured land rights, planning approval and a grid connection, while EirGrid awarded it a 10-year capacity contract. Energy Dome expects operations to begin in 2028 and plans to add a second 200 MWh unit at the site.
"This milestone is a next step in our long-term partnership with Energy Dome, and will help scale their promising long-duration energy storage technology, charging ahead to an affordable, secure and clean energy future," said Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland.
