Georgia Power, a subsidiary of energy holding company Southern Company (SO), has entered into an agreement with Google (GOOG) to advance nuclear energy in Georgia, it said on Monday.
Under the agreement, to be approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, Google will support upgrades at Georgia Power's owned portions of nuclear units at the Vogtle and Hatch power plants, allowing for the addition of about 96 megawatts of capacity to the grid, Georgia Power said in a statement.
Google's subscription to the proposed or planned nuclear capacity expansion at the two power plants is expected to result in about $900 million in projected benefits to customers over the life of the units, it said.
The agreement is set out in filings made by Georgia Power on Monday to the Georgia PSC. The filings also propose a new nuclear uprate tariff structure and seek approval for an extended power uprate for Plant Hatch 1 and 2. A similar uprate for Plant Vogtle 1 and 2 was approved by Georgia PSC in the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan, the statement said.
