Portuguese energy firm Galp Energia and two of its Dutch subsidiaries have launched international arbitration proceedings against Mozambique over a natural gas concession, according to the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes website on Friday.
The case, registered by ICSID on June 26, is brought by Galp Energia, Galp Energia Portugal and Galp East Africa against Mozambique. The dispute concerns a natural gas concession in the southeast African country.
Though ICSID has not published details of the claims, the case reportedly centers on Galp's 2024 sale of a 10% stake in the Area 4 Rovuma Basin project offshore Mozambique to XRG, a unit of Adnoc, and on government suggestions that Galp owed a larger capital gains tax than it paid, according to Reuters.
Galp received about $881 million after finalizing the deal in 2025 and said this included capital gains taxes, Reuters reported.
Galp did not immediately respond to' request for comment.
