The Empire State index rose unexpectedly to 20.6 in August from 15.6 in July, indicating faster growth for the first regional manufacturing conditions reading for the month.
The National Association of Home Builders Housing Market Index rose to 35 in August from 34 in July and was up from a reading of 32 a year ago.
NAHB said that the index still suggests weakness in the homebuilding sector due to uncertainty, high mortgage rates and rising cost.
