China's renewable power generation capacity reached 2.46 billion kilowatts in H1 2026, accounting for 60.7% of the country's total installed power capacity, the National Energy Administration said on Monday.
The NEA said that wind and solar capacity reached about 1.95 billion kW, accounting for nearly half of total power capacity, while solar power capacity was about equal to that of coal-fired generation.
Renewable energy accounted for 73.9% of China's new power capacity added in H1 2026, with 117 million kW added during the period. The NEA said that renewable power generation reached 1.96 trillion kilowatt-hours in the January-June period, or 41.2% of total electricity generation.
Combined wind and solar generation reached 1.25 trillion kWh, equivalent to 24.6% of China's total social electricity consumption.
The NEA said renewable energy was playing an increasingly important role in ensuring power supply and supporting the country's energy transition.
The authority said the government should accelerate the implementation of policies covering renewable energy development, green certificate issuance and trading, participation of new energy projects in electricity markets, zero-carbon industrial parks and direct green-power connections.
