Cheniere Energy (LNG) said on Monday it had completed the expansion of its Corpus Christi liquefied natural gas facility in Texas, adding more than 20% to the company's production capacity as global demand for the fuel continues to grow.
The company said that it achieved substantial completion of the Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 3 project on Aug. 28, when engineering and construction contractor Bechtel Energy handed over the seventh and final LNG production train.
The expansion lifts Cheniere's operating LNG production capacity to about 56 million metric tons per year. Cheniere began work on the project in June 2022 and produced its first LNG from the initial Stage 3 train in December 2024.
Cheniere said it had produced and exported its 5,000th LNG cargo from its US Gulf Coast operations, reaching the milestone faster than any other LNG producer. The cargo was loaded onto the Yari LNG carrier at the energy firm's Sabine Pass facility on Aug. 29, and the carrier departed for Asia.
The company produced its first LNG cargo in 2016 and has since supplied more than 340 million tons of LNG to global markets. Its LNG operations now account for more than 10% of global LNG capacity.
Cheniere operates liquefaction facilities at Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi on the US Gulf Coast, with combined production capacity of about 56 mtpa. It also has about 5 mtpa of additional capacity under construction.
