Oil prices rose Thursday morning as Pakistan stated it was not required to abide by US sanctions since they were not imposed by the United Nations, several media outlets reported.
Earlier this week, China also rejected US sanctions against Iran.
The UK's Maritime Trade Operations also reported an incident in the Strait of Hormuz on Aug. 26, where a tanker was hit by an "unknown projectile" that caused a vessel fire that was later extinguished.
However, Iran and Qatar discussed the possibility of clearing the Strait of Hormuz of land mines in a joint effort. Qatar's prime minister, who is also its foreign minister, is currently in Iran, Reuters reported.
West Texas Intermediate October crude oil futures, the US benchmark, rose 0.6% to $82.71 per barrel. October Brent oil futures, the international benchmark, also rose 1.2% to $88.91 a barrel.
Comex gold December futures edged down 0.6% to $4,625.80 per ounce.
In agricultural commodities, wheat futures for December delivery rose 0.2%, to $7.50 per bushel, after rising to a contract high at $7.67 per bushel. Canola November futures fell 0.9% to C$791.40 per tonne.
