BLT Energy said Wednesday that the Regional Development Assessment Panel has approved the development of its Red Gully battery energy storage system in Western Australia, marking a key milestone for one of the state's largest proposed energy storage projects.
The project with a total capacity of 800 megawatts and 4,800 megawatt-hours of storage, is set to deliver up to 400 MW of power, with 2,400 MWh of storage to the South West Interconnected System in Phase 1.
Located adjacent to Western Power's Regans Terminal, the facility is intended to store excess renewable energy generation and discharge electricity during periods of higher demand, supporting grid reliability as renewable energy penetration increases.
With approvals now secured, the company said that it will advance remaining work in the project, which includes detailed engineering design and financing, before beginning with phase 1 construction.
