The Bureau of Land Management on Friday introduced a proposed rule to fast-track oil and gas permitting across Alaska's 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve, aiming to slash red tape and accelerate energy infrastructure development.
This regulatory shift follows recent federal actions to unlock the reserve's potential, including reopening nearly 82% of the area to oil and gas leasing.
Interest in the region has already surged, highlighted by a historic lease sale in March 2026 that brought in more than $163 million across 187 tracts.
BLM noted that the new framework will provide operators with the regulatory certainty needed to drive investment.
The proposed rule is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register, opening a 60-day public comment period that closes on Nov. 9.
