US-based sodium-ion battery developer, Alsym Energy, and Australian mining consultancy Erity have entered an agreement to deploy nine gigawatt hours of battery energy storage across the global mining sector, Alsym Energy said Wednesday.
The deal aims to address off-grid energy vulnerability in the mining industry, which currently consumes roughly 125 billion liters of diesel annually, as per the statement.
Remote mining locations frequently rely on diesel generation for 30% to 50% of their total operating costs. This partnership aims to lower these overheads and scale down industry emissions, Alsym said.
The initial rollout will focus on existing and pipeline mining sites managed by Volt Resources and Resource Minerals International across Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Finland, and US, the company said.
