Meta Platforms (META) has been instructed by the Philippine government to strengthen efforts to curb "panic-inducing" misinformation on its platforms, including false claims about oil prices and energy supply disruptions, the country's Presidential Communications Office said Monday.
In an April 10 letter to Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the Presidential Communications Office warned that the continued spread of such content could breach the Philippines' laws and threaten public order, economic confidence, and national security.
Officials said Meta must enhance systems to detect and curb high-risk disinformation, giving it 48 hours to acknowledge the directive and seven days to submit a response plan, the statement said.
"Failure to take prompt and sufficient action shall constrain the Philippine Government to consider appropriate regulatory and legal measures," according to the letter.
Meta Platforms didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from.
