New Zealand's Jobless Rate Falls in March Quarter

New Zealand's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.3% in the March quarter from 5.4% in the December 2025 quarter, data from Stats NZ showed on Wednesday.The seasonally-adjusted number of unemployed people for the quarter was 163,000, down from 165,000 for the December 2025 quarter.The underutilization rate was unchanged at nearly 13% in the quarter, while the participation rate slid 70.4% from 70.5% in the December 2025 quarter.The seasonally-adjusted employment rate was flat at about 67%.The seasonally adjusted youth not in employment, education, or training (NEET) rate rose to over 14% in the March quarter, up from over 13% in the December 2025 quarter."Women aged 20 to 24 continue to have the highest NEET rate, rising 1.9 percentage points to 20.3% in the March quarter," labor market spokesperson Abby Johnston said.

Quantity Sold at GDT Auction Nearly Reaches 14,000 Metric Tonnes

A total of 13,743 metric tonnes (MT) of products were sold during the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction held on Tuesday, with supply ranging from 13,068 to 17,289 MT, according to data from the trading platform.The average selling price for whole milk powder was $3,741 per MT, anhydrous milk fat averaged $6,461 per MT, and mozzarella and butter averaged at $4,010 per MT and $5,525 per MT, respectively.Additionally, cheddar prices averaged $4,611 per MT, lactose averaged $1,522 per MT, and skim milk powder and butter milk powder averaged at $3,547 per MT and $3,467 per MT, respectively.

US job openings fell to 6.866 million in March from 6.922 million in February, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slightly ahead of the 6.850 million openings expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.The March level represents 4.1% of total employment, down from 4.2% both in February and from a year earlier.At the same time, hiring rose to 5.554 million from 4.899 million in February, lifting the hiring rate to 3.5% from 3.1%.Separations increased in the month to 5.378 million from 5.022 million in February. Component indexes measure new orders, production, employment, and prices.An increase in the index further above 50 is considered a sign of a strong US services sector and would be a positive for service-sector stocks. Rising prices would normally be a negative for both stocks and bonds.

The S&P Global US services index was revised downwards to 51.0 in April from the 51.3 flash reading, compared with expectations for no revision in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:40 am ET.The April index is still above 49.8 reading in March and now indicates expansion.S&P Global noted weak demand which led to a decrease in sales. Uncertainty increased because of higher inflation and the Middle East war. Employment increased slightly. The confidence in the outlook also improved.

Redbook US Same-Store Sales Rise in Week Ended May 2

Redbook US same-store sales rose by 7.8% from a year earlier in the week ended May 2 after a 7.7% year-over-year increase in the previous week."Warmer weather and Mother's Day promotions are boosting sales of seasonal clothing and accessories as the day approaches," Redbook noted.Through the fourth selling week for April, sales were up 7.3% compared with April 2025, higher than the target for a 7.2% gain, Redbook said. The initial target for the May sales month is for a 7.7% gain.

The US international trade deficit widened to $60.31 billion in March from a $57.78 billion gap in February, compared with a $61.0 billion gap expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:40 am ET.Imports rose more than exports, widening the deficit.Imports of auto supplies, consumer goods, capital goods, industrial supplies and food and beverages all increased in the month.Exports of industrial supplies, food and beverages, auto supplies and capital goods all increased in March, while exports of consumer goods decreased.
