Southeast Asia is embarking on a new wave of deepwater gas developments aimed at unlocking roughly 28 trillion cubic feet of resources, though fragile project economics and execution risks could test the region's ability to deliver, Wood Mackenzie strategists said in a note on Monday.Wood Mackenzie said the projects are expected to require more than $20 billion in investment by 2030, as governments and operators seek to offset declining output from maturing shallow-water and onshore fields."Southeast Asia's shallow-water and onshore gas fields are maturing rapidly, and this necessitates a focus on deepwater resources that were once considered too risky and expensive," said Munish Kumar, senior research analyst at Wood Mackenzie.The investment, spanning Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, marks what Wood Mackenzie describes as Asia's "Deepwater 2.0" phase, following an earlier wave of projects between 2008 and 2017.The deepwater projects established commercial viability but failed to sustain momentum due to regulatory, geological and commercial hurdles, the consultancy said.Wood Mackenzie analysts said the renewed focus comes amid growing energy security concerns.Indonesia's non-associated offshore gas production has fallen more than 12% from its 2018 peak, while Brunei will need an additional 500 million cubic feet per day of supply after 2030 to maintain liquefied natural gas exports.Malaysia is also increasing its reliance on offshore developments, with deepwater output projected to account for about 20% of its gas production by 2027.Wood Mackenzie said major developments include the North Ganal, Rapak, and Ganal projects in Indonesia's Kutei Basin, the South Andaman fields in North Sumatra, Kelidang in Brunei, and the Rosmari-Majoram project in Malaysia."These projects will deliver critical gas supply into domestic markets and LNG export plants to replace declining legacy production," said Kumar.Operators include global energy majors, such as Italy's Eni and Shell, alongside national oil firms like Malaysia's Petronas and Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Energy, which is entering deepwater development in the region.However, despite most projects' strategic importance, Wood Mackenzie said they offer internal rates of return of about 15% under base-case assumptions, which are lower than those of comparable deepwater developments globally.Project economics are highly sensitive to cost overruns, pricing and delays. The consultancy said a 20% rise in capital expenditure, or a similar drop in gas prices or output, could wipe out around 150% of the project's value, while a three-year delay could halve returns."Without progressive fiscal mechanisms to share risk, there's virtually no cushion for execution failures," Kumar said.

Commercial electricity sales in Virginia increased by nearly 30.0 million megawatt hours between 2019 and 2025, much faster growth than in any other state except Texas, the US Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday.In its Annual Electric Power Industry Report, it said the growth in electricity sales in Virginia is largely driven by a concentration of data centers, as well as by electric vehicle adoption and building electrification.Electricity sales refer to the delivery of energy from load-serving entities, which are mostly utilities, to final consumers. However, LSEs must have sufficient resources and reserves to respond to hourly, daily, and seasonal spikes in customer demand, amid steadily growing energy demand in their service territories and extreme weather events. Peak load, a snapshot of the maximum load in megawatts, denotes the instantaneous, single-highest peak in a day, month, or season, even if it lasts only 15 minutes, EIA said.Earlier this year, PJM Interconnection said in its 2026 Long-Term Load Forecast that its Virginia-serving Dominion zone will see the largest absolute increase in summer peak demand from 2026 to 2030, driven largely by data center growth.PJM's Dominion zone currently hosts the largest concentration of data centers in the world, largely because of its fiber-optic connectivity, land availability, and power infrastructure.Summer peak load in PJM's Dominion zone was 23,905 MW in 2025, 23% higher than in 2019; similarly, winter peak load in PJM's Dominion zone was 25,413 MW in the 2025-26 winter season, 45% higher than in the 2019-20 winter season. American Electric Power Q1 Energy Delivery Mixed

US natural gas futures were down on Tuesday after four straight days of gains, amid forecasts of further declines in domestic demand and milder near-term temperatures.Both the front-month Henry Hub contract and the continuous contract were down 0.98% to $2.83 per million British thermal units.Total natural gas demand is expected to fall by 4.0 billion cubic feet on Tuesday, to 95.4 Bcf per day, according to NRG Energy, which attributed the decline to milder weather and colder-than-average temperatures, leading to lower residential and commercial demand.LNG export feedgas is also expected to decline to 17.3 Bcf per day, significantly below the 30-day moving average of 19.38 Bcf.The Energy Buyer's Guide echoed similar views, noting that cooler-than-normal temperatures will persist throughout the eastern two-thirds of the country over the next two weeks, while the west is expected to be warmer-than-normal, both of which, it said, will lead to subdued natural gas demand in the near-term.

The July contract inched up 1.90% to 4,710 ringgit/mt. Both contracts touched near four-week highs earlier in the session.Deputy Prime Minister Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly said that 19 biodiesel plants will start producing B15 from June 1, according to multiple media outlets. Q1 export volumes also fell year over year to 5.85 mmt from 5.35 mmt.The country's move to raise its biodiesel mandate to 50% from the current 40% beginning July 1 will increase domestic consumption, potentially reducing exports further, particularly with the expected reduction in local supply due to a developing El Nino weather phenomenon and rising fertilizer costs.Exports from both Malaysia and Indonesia weakened due to lower demand from key importer India. A war-driven price rally prompted Indian buyers to cut purchases, with palm oil imports dropping 27% month over month to a one-year low of 505,000 metric tons in April, according to dealers cited by Reuters.As palm oil prices rose and discounts to rival oils narrowed, India's April soybean oil imports reportedly increased from a month earlier by 24% to 355,000 mt.
