Gartner Needs to Deliver Contract Value Growth to Alleviate Concerns on Generative AI Disintermediation, RBC Says

Gartner (IT) needs to deliver substantial growth in contract value to alleviate investor concerns about the disintermediation risk of generative artificial intelligence, RBC Capital Markets said in a note emailed Wednesday.Contract value growth in Q1 decelerated to 3.5%, not counting federal government agreements. This was due to deals postponed in March related to the conflict in the Middle East, RBC analysts said. They noted that many of these deals were actually closed in April instead. The company ended Q1 with around $114 million in federal government contracts, and it expects a 250-basis-point drag on growth to ease in Q2 as the company laps the Department of Government Efficiency impacts, the analysts said. Gartner anticipates federal revenue for the year to be flat and return to growth in 2027, the firm noted. The company expects contract value to accelerate growth for the rest of the year, driven by easing pressures from the government, better customer retention following major renewals, and new wins expected in Q2 and Q3 fueled by a strong pipeline, according to the note.RBC maintained the company's stock rating at sector perform and lowered the price target to $160 from $175.Price: $151.02, Change: $+1.53, Percent Change: +1.02%

Research Alert: CFRA Lowers Opinion On Shares Of Gartner Inc. To Buy From Strong Buy

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We lower our price target by $31 to $204, 15x our 2026 EPS view, a significant discount to IT's three-year average (~32x) given declining growth metrics and AI competition. We lift our 2026 EPS view by $0.52 to $13.57 and raise 2027's by $0.60 to $14.55. Q1 saw another quarter of impressive margin expansion (contribution margin +260 bps Y/Y to 71.6%), aiding a 14% EPS beat, but CV growth again underwhelmed despite showing moderate acceleration (+1.0% Y/Y vs. +0.8% in Q4). Engagement metrics continue to improve, and we expect continued traction for AskGartner to further boost usage, leading to improved retention metrics. As-reported CV growth is also set to get a boost from the lapping of U.S. Federal headwinds in Q2, providing a potential positive catalyst. Nonetheless, the consistent introduction of "temporary" headwinds (now including the Middle East conflict) continues to weigh down growth, making it hard for IT to shake the bearish narrative that AI competition is structurally hurting its growth trajectory.

Research Alert: It: Growth Metrics Fight Off Deceleration But Remain Stuck; Margins Impress

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:IT reported Q1 2026 sales of $1.51B (-1.5% Y/Y, -4.3% ex-FX), near consensus of $1.52B, with Insights (87% of total) flat Y/Y to continue a deceleration from +1% in Q4 and +4% in Q3. Non-GAAP EPS of $3.32 (+11%) beat Street estimates of $2.92, helped by Insights contribution margin expanding 110 bps Q/Q to 78.2% and strong buyback activity of $535M. Global CV growth remains stuck, growing by just 1.0% Y/Y to $5.3B, but these results improved from 0.8% in Q4, reversing a multi-quarter deceleration. We expect CV growth to improve from here on AskGartner momentum. Wallet retention of 77.7% (+20 bps Q/Q, -530 bps Y/Y) and Client retention of 85.0% (-30 bps Q/Q, +60 bps Y/Y) were largely unchanged Q/Q. FY 26 sales guidance was revised from >$6.455B to >$6.405B (-1% Y/Y), with Q1's weak Consulting results (-17%) contributing the entirety of the reduction, which may spook investors worried about AI competition. Still, IT raised its EPS forecast to >$13.25 (flat Y/Y) from >$12.30 prior, providing decent support.
