British Shares Fall Back Amid Renewed Peace Talks; GSK to Buy Nuvalent

London's FTSE 100 dropped 1.41% on Tuesday's close as oil prices trended down with Iran and Israel's renewed efforts towards restoring peace.US President Donald Trump told reporters that Washington was "very close to having a good strong powerful deal" and that they "could have an idea on Iran in one or two days now," Deutsche Bank Research noted. Israel and Iran agreed to halt direct military strikes on each other the night before. In corporate news, drugmaker GSK (GSK.L) fell 0.50% after agreeing to acquire US-based oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company Nuvalent for $10.6 billion. "The acquisition provides GSK with immediate new sales growth opportunities, improving profit contributions from 2027, and a platform in lung cancer for rapid expansion with Ris-Rez, our B7-H3 targeted ADC in phase III clinical development," GSK Chief Executive Luke Miels said.Information analytics group Relx (REL.L) launched a share buyback program of up to 200 million pounds sterling. The new program will run until June 26, and shares acquired under the scheme will be held in treasury. The stock was flat at close. On the economic front, the UK's retail sales rose 3.4% year over year on a like-for-like basis in May, following a 3.4% decline in April, according to data from the British Retail Consortium. The reading, which surpassed the expected 0.6% increase for the month, marks the strongest retail sales growth since April 2025 due to demand for outdoor and summer goods amid a heatwave."While the sunshine gave retail a welcome lift, this momentum should not be taken for granted. Household finances remain under pressure, consumer confidence is still fragile, and many retailers continue to face rising costs. If Government wants to keep inflation in check and support growth, it must urgently tackle the taxes and levies that are driving up energy bills. Without action, cost pressures will build further, limiting retailers' ability to invest and pushing prices up for customers," BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson said.Meanwhile, the UK launched a long-term artificial intelligence hardware strategy aimed at supporting domestic chipmakers and expanding national computing infrastructure. A 400 million-pound-sterling fund will support the initiative, as the UK seeks to equip its next national AI supercomputer with next-generation chips, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves said at an AI Adoption Summit. Reeves also confirmed that the British government plans to launch a formal tender process for the new national supercomputer in Edinburgh.

UK Shares Start Week in Green as IMF Lifts UK Growth Outlook, Politics in Focus

London's FTSE 100 closed 1.26% higher on Monday as the International Monetary Fund increased its 2026 growth forecast for the UK to 1% from 0.8%, while investors also monitored political developments surrounding Prime Minister Keir Starmer."In the UK, Labour's decision to let [Mayor of Greater Manchester] Andy Burnham seek a return to parliament sharpens the leadership crisis facing Prime Minister Keir Starmer after heavy local election losses, which have already prompted intensified calls for him to resign," Danske Bank said."The risk is that a new, further left, prime minister pursues policies that further add to business costs, eroding profit margins and putting upward pressure on inflation," according to Berenberg. "Were a new prime minister to water down or abandon fiscal tightening at the same time, the [Bank of England] would have to set higher interest rates to prevent excess demand and inflation. The resulting combination of higher interest rates and lower profits would result in an inadequate rate of return for companies to invest and hurt the UK's long-term growth prospects."Meanwhile, the UK government and the Gulf Cooperation Council are reportedly nearing a free trade agreement after years of talks, according to London's Financial Times. In an emailed statement to, a UK government spokesperson said negotiations are continuing and remain a priority for the government. In corporate news, mining major Anglo American (AAL.L) dropped 1.36% after agreeing to sell its Australian steelmaking coal mines to Dhilmar for up to $3.88 billion in cash.Pharmaceutical giant GSK (GSK.L) gained 0.75% as Japan's health regulator expanded the eligible age range for its respiratory syncytial virus vaccine, Arexvy, to include at-risk patients aged 18 to 49.Investors will also look ahead this week to UK unemployment data for March on Tuesday, April inflation figures on Wednesday, S&P Global PMI data for May on Thursday, and retail sales numbers on Friday.

UK Shares End Lower Ahead of Central Bank Decisions, Earnings

British equities closed in the red on Monday, with the FTSE 100 down 0.56%, as investors remained cautious ahead of upcoming corporate earnings and key central bank rate decisions, including from the Bank of England."Even if recent data has come in quite solid, the UK labour market is much cooler and the starting point for the Bank Rate at 3.75% is much higher compared to 2022. Hiking rates will have to be weighed against a considerable risk of exacerbating a looming economic contraction. We think it is most likely the BoE will remain sidelined for the foreseeable future," Danske Bank said.Meanwhile, the Confederation of British Industry distributive trades survey's retail sales balance fell to -68% in April from -52% in March. The consensus estimate was -42% for the month, according to Investing.com."With the economic impact of the Iran conflict becoming clearer, firms will be looking to government to recognise that easing cost of living pressures depends on tackling the cost of doing business. For the distribution sector, that means securing appropriate landing zones on the Employment Rights Act, delivering meaningful business rates reform, and exploring further how non-energy policy costs can be removed from electricity bills," CBI lead economist Martin Sartorius said.In corporate news, GSK (GSK.L), down 0.20%, had a busy start to the new week. Aside from completing a license agreement for its cholestatic pruritus treatment, linerixibat, with Alfasigma, the British pharmaceutical giant also secured breakthrough therapy and priority medicines designations in the US and Europe, respectively, for its once-monthly investigational liver therapy, efimosfermin.Meanwhile, the Delaware Chancery Court in the US granted the motion to dismiss filed by AnaptysBio against GSK subsidiary Tesaro, with the latter affirming its view that the anticipatory breach claim is entirely without merit.

GSK's Blenrep Gets Chinese Regulatory Nod Amid Doubling of Multiple Myeloma Incidence

GSK (GSK.L) received approval from China's National Medical Products Administration for Blenrep, providing a new treatment option for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma amid the continued rise in cases in the country. In a Monday filing, the biopharma company noted that China's multiple myeloma cases have doubled to 30,000 annually, with mortality rising 50% over three decades. Globally, the "treatable but incurable" disease is considered the third most common blood cancer, with 180,000 new cases diagnosed yearly.Following a priority review by the Chinese regulator, the monoclonal antibody-drug conjugate was cleared for use in combination with bortezomib and dexamethasone to treat adult patients who have undergone at least one prior line of therapy. The approval was backed by data from the Dreamm-7 phase 3 study, with the Blenrep regimen delivering "statistically significant and clinically meaningful" progression-free survival and overall survival results against the daratumumab-based triplet combination with bortezomib and dexamethasone. Additionally, the Blenrep combination maintained a consistent safety profile with the documented safety characteristics of the individual medications involved."Today's approval of Blenrep brings anti-[B-cell maturation antigen] therapy to patients in China with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma in 2L+, introducing a differentiated mechanism of action with the potential to help slow disease progression and extend survival. Further, Blenrep, as the only anti-BCMA ADC, is fully outpatient administered, so patients can be treated at any site of care without complex pre-administration regimens or hospitalisation," said Hesham Abdullah, senior vice president, global head oncology, research & development at GSK.With more than 15 authorizations internationally, Blenrep is an established treatment for second-line plus multiple myeloma across markets, including the European Union, the UK, and Japan. The approved combinations include dexamethasone and either bortezomib or pomalidomide.GSK's London-listed stock was marginally down by Monday midday trade.
