Cybersecurity Stocks' Hefty Valuations Demand Caution Ahead of Earnings, Morgan Stanley Says

Cybersecurity stocks' lofty valuations warrant caution ahead of upcoming quarterly results, especially for certain vulnerability management names, Morgan Stanley said in a client note.Cybersecurity stocks have rallied about 25% over the last month as worries about the impact of artificial intelligence eased, the investment firm said. Vulnerability management providers, in particular, saw their valuations almost double.Demand for the cybersecurity sector remains healthy, but that still does not justify current prices, Morgan Stanley said."Checks have improved for cybersecurity (quarter over quarter), with indications that they should improve further into (the third quarter), leaving us positive (on) the cyber category as a whole," the firm said. "However, with valuations having almost doubled off the bottoms post (the first quarter), and on-cycle names unlikely to show material inflections, we lean more cautious heading into the on-cycle prints."Morgan Stanley said it is particularly cautious on vulnerability management companies Qualys (QLYS) and Rapid7 (RPD).On the other hand, the brokerage prefers Palo Alto Networks (PANW) and CrowdStrike (CRWD) that it believes are "best positioned" to benefit from the AI-driven consolidation.Morgan Stanley raised the price target to $387 from $320 for Palo Alto and to $227 from $172 for CrowdStrike, while reiterating its overweight rating on both stocks. The firm replaced CrowdStrike with Palo Alto as its "top pick," saying the latter "offers the strongest combination of platform consolidation tailwinds, AI security exposure, and margin expansion at current valuation levels."Morgan Stanley raised the price target for Qualys to $115 from $96, while it downgraded its rating on Rapid7 to underweight from equal-weight."While we agree the category has evolved beyond bug-finding into exposure management, where it is more defensive (versus) AI-natives, we don't believe Rapid7 has executed that pivot successfully enough, as evidenced by just 1.2% revenue growth over the last 12 months," the firm said.Morgan Stanley upgraded Fortinet (FTNT) to equal-weight from underweight and revised its price target to $133 from $80.Price: $143.22, Change: $-13.15, Percent Change: -8.41%

Research Alert: CFRA Maintains Hold Rating On Shares Of Fortinet Inc.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We raise our target price from $119 to $148 on a forward P/E of 42x our 2027 EPS projection of $3.40, below its three-year average. We increase our 2026 EPS projection to $3.15 from $3.13 and our 2027 EPS forecast to $3.45 from $3.40. We note rising enterprise AI tool consumption and agentic use from customers of software providers in earnings reports over the past month, signaling a shift from tool experimentation to deployment in production environments. This is expected to drive greater interest in new security tools to keep pace with rapid technology evolutions. We believe FTNT will be a beneficiary of cybersecurity spending as customers choose to consolidate with large vendors for reduced complexity when they expand their AI security capabilities. We also anticipate continued momentum with its FortiSASE and SecOps solutions from higher network traffic and the need for better visibility as attack surfaces expand.

Fortinet Set for Faster Growth on Cyber Risk, AI Upgrades, Wedbush Says

Fortinet (FTNT) is positioned for stronger growth as AI-driven infrastructure needs, rising cyber risks, product upgrades, vendor consolidation, and improving sales momentum support its revenue and billings outlook, Wedbush Securities said Thursday in a report.Q1 billings rose 31% to $2.09 billion, above Wall Street estimates, with strength across security operations and operational technology security, the report said. Research Alert: CFRA Keeps Hold Rating On Shares Of Fortinet Inc.

CFRA, an independent research provider, has providedwith the following research alert. Analysts at CFRA have summarized their opinion as follows:We raise our target price to $119, from $92, on a forward P/E of 35x our 2027 EPS projection of $3.40, below its three-year average. We increase our 2026 EPS projection to $3.13 from $2.96 and our 2027 EPS forecast to $3.40 from $3.28. FTNT reported remarkable Q1 results with revenue surging 20% Y/Y to $1.85B, fueled by product revenue growth of 40.5% to $645M and service revenue growth of 11% to $1.21B. Billings accelerated 31% to $2.09B, with secure networking billings up 32%. While we note Product outperformance and a raised guide, we are wary that strength in the Product segment may reflect pulled-forward demand as customers address memory constraints. We therefore see the risk that growth at these levels may not sustain into H2 2026. Non-GAAP operating margin hit a Q1 record of 35.8%, up 160 bps Y/Y, while management maintained gross margin guidance of 79%-81% and operating margin guidance of 33%-36%. Free cash flow reached a record $1.01B.

Fortinet Delivers Q1 Beat on Firewall, AI Demand Amid Sustainability Questions, Morgan Stanley Says

Fortinet (FTNT) delivered stronger-than-expected Q1 results driven by robust firewall demand, operational technology security momentum, and early artificial intelligence data center deployments, Morgan Stanley said in a note Thursday.Product revenue jumped 41% year over year as enterprise customers upgraded to higher-performance appliances for AI infrastructure needs, and total billings rose 31% on strong demand across Secure Networking, Unified SASE, and AI-driven SecOps offerings, the brokerage said. The company also raised its fiscal 2026 outlook, but sustainability of the hardware-driven growth remains uncertain amid possible demand pull-forward dynamics and slowing subscription and service revenue growth, according to the note."Better billings and deferred revenue trends help, though near-term upside looks limited pending durable software attach acceleration," the brokerage said.Morgan Stanley maintained its underweight rating on the stock, but raised its price target to $80 from $70.Shares of Fortinet were up more than 23% in Thursday trading.Price: $110.70, Change: $+20.75, Percent Change: +23.06%
