Australian Shares Flat; Syrah Resources Resolves Offtake Agreement Issues With Tesla

Australian shares were flat with a negative bias on Monday as investors awaited fresh developments on an awaited peace agreement in the Middle East.The S&P/ASX 200 Index was little changed at 8,729.40.Negotiators from the US and Iran are still trying to work out a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East, Reuters reported.Brent crude oil futures rose over 2% to trade around $93 per barrel.On the domestic front, the Westpac-DataX Card Tracker Index continued its gradual decline, falling 1.6 points over four weeks to 153.2 in the week that ended May 23, slightly below the year-to-date average of 154.The headline seasonally adjusted S&P Global Australia Manufacturing Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) fell to 50.7 in May from 51.3 in April, remaining above the 50-point mark separating contraction and expansion.The Melbourne Institute said its monthly inflation gauge fell in May after two consecutive monthly increases, driven largely by a decline in transport costs, particularly fuel prices.The ANZ-Indeed Australian job ads rose 1.8% month on month in May to a seasonally adjusted 116, following a 3.7% decline over the prior two months.In company news, Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) said Tesla no longer plans to terminate an offtake agreement with the company after Syrah showed that it is producing conforming active anode material samples. Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) said Tesla no longer plans to terminate an offtake agreement with the company after Syrah showed that it is producing conforming active anode material samples, according to a Monday filing with the Australian bourse.Tesla previously claimed that Syrah defaulted on an obligation under the agreement to provide conforming natural graphite active anode material samples from a facility in Louisiana, US.Syrah said it has now "made sufficient progress to cure the alleged default" and is progressing through later stages of qualification testing approvals with Tesla.Shares of Syrah Resources jumped more than 26% in recent Monday trade.

Syrah Resources Production at Mozambique Graphite Operation Reaches 23.500 Tonnes

Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) delivered total graphite production of 23,500 tonnes for the March quarter from its Balama graphite operation in Mozambique, according to a Wednesday Australian bourse filing.There was no production at Balama due to protests impeding operations in the year-ago quarter, per a separate filing.Natural graphite sales to external customers were 20,000 tonnes for the quarter, and it completed a large volume breakbulk shipment to Indonesia during the quarter.It noted supply chain risks to Balama, particularly for imported consumables such as diesel, created by the conflict in the Middle East. It is engaged with suppliers and is focused on optimizing the use of its solar and battery system at Balama to manage its exposure to any temporary diesel supply risks.

Syrah Resources Completes AU$61 Million Retail Portion of Equity Raise

Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) has completed the retail component of its 1 for 1.32 pro rata accelerated equity raise, receiving valid applications for about 230 million new shares, according to a Wednesday filing with the Australian bourse.The company said about 356 million new shares, representing entitlements that were not taken up by eligible retail shareholders, will be allotted to AustralianSuper as the sub-underwriter of the retail component. AustralianSuper's stake in Syrah is expected to be about 49.6% once the equity raise is complete, per the filing.The company will issue approximately 586 million new shares under the retail component on April 24.The retail component generated about AU$61 million at a fixed price of AU$0.105 per new share, and together with the earlier institutional component, the equity raise has generated about AU$104 million.Syrah will use the proceeds to fund working capital at its Vidalia processing facility in Louisiana and ramp up its Balama graphite operation in Mozambique to targeted levels, the company said.Shares of Syrah Resources were down 2% in recent Wednesday trade.
