S&P/TSX Composite Index up 40 Points at Midday, With Commodities Sectors Higher
The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 40 five points mid-morning Monday, as gains in the commodities sectors managed to outweigh declines in information technology and healthcare.The energy sector, up 0.9%, was the best performer, followed by base metals, which was 0.8% higher.The worst performers were information technology and the healthcare sectors, down 1.1% and 1.2%, respectively.In economic news, Statistics Canada reported the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.0% year over year in July, following a 2.8% gain in June. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.3% in July. On a yearly basis, prices for gasoline grew at a faster rate jumping 25.7% in July, compared with the 20.5% increase in June.
