Zelestra Completes $1.1 Billion Sale of Latin America Unit to Promigas

Zelestra said on Friday it has completed the sale of its Latin America business unit to Colombia's Promigas, in a deal valued at about $1.1 billion, including project finance debt.

The divestment covers Zelestra's operations in Chile, Peru, and Colombia and includes about 3,500 megawatts of renewable energy assets across projects in operation, under construction, and in development.

Zelestra said the deal marks a shift toward its core markets in Europe and the US, including Spain, Germany, and Italy, where it is focusing on growth opportunities in areas such as data center demand.

However, despite the divestment, its engineering, procurement and construction division will continue to operate in Peru and Chile, including work on the Babilonia solar project in Peru's Arequipa region.

EU Energy Use in Industry Sector Continues to Decline, Eurostat Says

The EU's industrial sector cut energy use over the past decade, even as its fuel mix continued shifting away from coal and toward electricity and renewables, according to a statement released Friday by the EU's official statistics agency, Eurostat.In 2024, the EU industry consumed 8,835 petajoules of energy, down 8.1% from 2014. The long-term trend has been downward since 1990, reflecting efficiency gains and structural changes in industrial output.Electricity remained the largest energy source at 2,945 PJ, or 33.3% of total industrial consumption, followed closely by natural gas at 2,817 PJ at 31.9%.Renewables and biofuels ranked third at 999 PJ, or 11.3%, overtaking oil and petroleum products, which accounted for 922 PJ, or 10.4%. Other sources included solid fossil fuels at 484 PJ at 5.5%, heat at 483 PJ at 5.5%, and non-renewable waste at 186 PJ, or 2.1%.Compared with 2014, consumption fell across most energy categories. The sharpest declines were recorded in solid fossil fuels, down 34.8%, and heat, down 23.7%. Two categories moved in the opposite direction: non-renewable waste rose 32.1%, and renewables and biofuels increased 24.3%.The food, beverages and tobacco sector diverged from the broader industrial trend, increasing its energy use. It consumed 1,134 PJ in 2024, equal to 12.8% of total industrial energy use, up 4.7% from 2014.That sector relied heavily on natural gas, which made up 525 PJ, or 46.3%, and electricity at 401 PJ, or 35.3%. Smaller shares came from renewables and biofuels at 68 PJ, oil products at 60 PJ, heat 47 PJ, solid fossil fuels 32 PJ, and non-renewable waste 1 PJ.Within food manufacturing, the strongest growth came from renewables and biofuels, up 68.4%, and non-renewable waste, up 47.4%. Electricity use rose 8.1% and natural gas 5.0%. Solid fossil fuel consumption dropped 36.4% over the same period.

US Natural Gas Update: Prices Rise on Shrinking Storage Surplus, Cooling Demand Builds

US natural gas futures extended gains on Friday, supported by a bullish storage report and weather models pointing to rising cooling demand across key consuming regions.Front-month Henry Hub and the continuous contract both rose 1.43% to $3.331 per million British thermal units.The upward move leaves the market on track for a monthly gain of over 19%, according to Trading Economics, reversing April's 4.1% decline.The rally followed Thursday's storage data from the US Energy Information Administration, which showed utilities injected 92 billion cubic feet of gas into storage for the week ended May 22. That was below consensus expectations of 95 Bcf-96 Bcf and also under last year's 104 Bcf build for the same week.Total inventories rose to 2.483 trillion cubic feet, about 0.9% above year-ago levels and 6.2% above the five-year seasonal average. The surplus versus the five-year norm narrowed to 144 Bcf from 149 Bcf a week earlier, signaling a gradual tightening in balances.On the demand side, near-term power burn softened. NRG Energy estimated consumption slipped to around 36 Bcf per day and is expected to ease further toward 34 Bcf/d, with weakness across Texas, the Midwest, and the Southeast. However, the outlook points to a rebound into the upper-30 Bcf/d range over the next two weeks as temperatures climb.Weather forecasts continue to show expanding above-normal heat across the Central US and Midwest into early June, a setup that typically drives higher cooling demand and stronger gas-fired generation.Data from Celsius Energy showed the seven-day average power burn at 31.9 Bcf/d for the week ended May 27, up 2.9 Bcf/d year over year. Natural gas accounted for 38% of average power consumption, while total electricity use rose 1.1% compared with the same period last year.Broader consumption trends remain firm. Estimated US gas use in March 2026 reached 2,779 Bcf, or 89.6 Bcf/d, up 1% over the year, EIA said. The electric power sector led gains, increasing gas demand 10.6% to 29.6 Bcf/d.Supply remains steady but not accelerating. Lower-48 production eased slightly to 109.4 Bcf/d in May from 109.8 Bcf/d in April, according to Trading Economics data. However, preliminary EIA figures show dry gas output still expanding on a year-over-year basis, rising for a 12th straight month in March to 110.9 Bcf/d, up 3.3% from a year earlier.The EIA reported that the US exported 3.7 times as much natural gas as it imported in March. Imports fell 9.1% to 7.7 Bcf/d, while exports jumped 18.3% to a record 28.7 Bcf/d. LNG shipments rose 25.1% year over year, with exports reaching 18.5 Bcf/d to 34 countries.

Update: US Active Rig Count Rises by 4, Baker Hughes Says
