US crude oil stocks, including those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, fell by 1.6 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 4 following a decrease of 7.6 million barrels in the previous week.
Excluding inventories in the SPR, commercial crude oil stocks fell by 400,000 barrels after a 4.5-million-barrel decline in the previous week, a much smaller drop than the 1.4-million-barrel decrease expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
Stocks in the SPR fell by 1.2 million in the week after falling by 3.1 million in the previous week.
Overall crude oil stocks were down 0.2% from the previous week and were down 14.5% from a year earlier. Crude oil inventories are right on the five-year average for this time of the year.
Gasoline stocks rose by 1.3 million barrels compared with a 1.3-million-barrel decrease expected. Gasoline stocks were up 0.6% from the previous week, but down 5.9% from a year earlier.
Distillate stocks rose by 2.1 million barrels in the current week, compared with an expected decrease of 700,000 barrels. Distillate stocks were up 2.0% from the previous week but were still 11.9% lower than in the same week a year ago.
Refineries operated at 97.8% of their capacity, down from 98.0% in the previous week.
