The US Treasury sanctioned three Iranian individuals and two entities Thursday under Operation Economic Outcast, targeting a digital-asset network tied to financier Babak Zanjani, the Office of Foreign Assets Control said.
OFAC designated BitBank, a digital-asset venture controlled by OFAC-designated Iranian financier Babak Zanjani, and its developer, Pishtaz Simorgh Electronic Trade Company, it said.
Since June, OFAC-designated Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority has used BitBank to transfer payments to Iran's regime, while Zanjani's network moved hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin.
The sanctions also target Zanjani associates Hossein Ali Zaker Hossein, Mohammad Mahdi Zaker Hossein and Seyed Adel Heidari, whom OFAC identified as part of the network.
Treasury said Zanjani's infrastructure includes digital-asset platforms and developers that helped transfer funds to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, under the Iran sanctions program.
"Today's designations of Iranian digital asset infrastructure make perfectly clear that efforts to finance the Iranian regime using cryptocurrencies are not beyond OFAC's reach," said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent.
Operation Economic Outcast, announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Aug. 24, 2026, targets Iran's revenue networks and financial channels with support from US, European and Gulf partners.
