US, Iran Explore Phased Route Out of Conflict as Trump Holds Firm on Talks

Washington and Tehran are discussing a phased route out of the conflict that could restore shipping through Hormuz, ease US economic pressure on Iran, and potentially unlock Tehran's frozen assets, according to multiple media reports on Thursday.

On background, a White House official toldin an emailed response that President Trump remains open to talks under the right conditions but sees little need to negotiate, citing US control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The official said sanctions and the blockade have severely weakened Iran's economy, while Operation Epic Fury damaged its military. The official also said Hormuz remains open after mines were removed or detonated.

"The United States is in a very strong position with control of the Strait of Hormuz and the Iranian economy collapsing. The Hormuz Strait is open and all water mines have been removed or detonated," the official said.

Qatari officials are mediating the negotiations between the US and Iran, according to a Bloomberg report.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately reply to' request for comment.

Soojin Kim, research analyst at MUFG, said that progress on both Saudi export capacity and US-Iran talks is unwinding part of the geopolitical premium, though unresolved Hormuz and Red Sea risks leave the market vulnerable to renewed disruption.
