US, China to Discuss AI Safety Protocol, Bessent Says

The U.S. and China will discuss procedures to prevent artificial intelligence models from being acquired by non-state actors, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview on CNBC Friday morning in Beijing.

"So the two AI superpowers are going to start talking. We're going to set up a protocol in terms of, how do we go forward with best practices for AI to make sure non-state actors, don't get a hold of these models," Bessent said.

Bessent did not provide a definitive timeline for the upcoming talks.

Xi and Trump were expected to discuss AI during their summit in Beijing this week.
