Ethanol futures closed higher toward the end of the week, despite lower weekly production and unchanged corn usage for the 2026/27 marketing year, as estimated in Friday's monthly data from the US Department of Agriculture.
The Nymex November ethanol futures contract settled 1.48% higher on Thursday at $2.06 per gallon.
The Chicago Board of Trade October soybean oil futures contract settled 3.11% lower at 69.19 cents per pound, while the CBOT November soybean futures contract closed 2.68% lower at $12.96 1/2 per bushel on Friday.
Iowa ethanol plants saw improved operating margins over the week, according to the Iowa State University Center for Agricultural and Rural Development.
Ethanol makers will use 5.6 billion bushels of corn in the 2026-2027 marketing year that started on Sep. 1, the USDA forecast in its monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report released Friday. That's unchanged from the August outlook for 5.6 billion bushels.
Total US corn use for 2026/27 is forecast at 16.18 billion bushels. That's down from last month's outlook of 16.33 billion.
Biodiesel makers will use 17.8 billion pounds of soybean oil in the 2026-2027 marketing year, which began on Oct. 1. That's unchanged from the August outlook and higher than the 14.8 billion pounds used in the 2025/2026 marketing year.
The USDA estimated US soybean oil 2026/2027 ending stocks at 1.87 billion pounds, unchanged from August.
Because soybean oil comes from soybeans, the oil market is directly affected by the entire soybean complex. Thus, the sharp selloff came amid neutral-to-bearish data in the USDA WASDE report.
Rhett Montgomery, DTN senior analyst, said traders clearly hoped for a more bullish outlook earlier in Friday's September WASDE.
"The USDA estimated the US soybean national yield at 52.8 bushels per acre, above what the trade expected. If realized, it would produce a record-setting 4.535 billion bushels of soybeans," he said.
Meanwhile, the USDA's Weekly Export Sales Report, delayed because of the Labor Day Holiday, showed that for the week ending Sep. 3, USDA reported an increase of 96.9 million bushels or 2,637,300 metric tons of soybean export sales for the 2026-27 marketing year, which began on Sep. 1. A total of 24.7 mb of sales were carried over from the 2025-26 year, which ended on Aug. 31.
