Urenco USA, a producer of enriched uranium, said Tuesday it will expand the capacity of its uranium enrichment facility in Eunice, New Mexico, by almost 50%.
The complex, with an annual capacity of 4.3 million separative work units, is the US' only commercial uranium enrichment facility, according to Urenco. The capacity will increase by 2.1 million SWU following the expansion.
The company said it is also working to complete an ongoing project that will increase capacity by another 700,000 SWU in 2027.
With these new investments, Urenco expects total installed capacity to exceed 7 million SWU over the next decade. It said it has invested over $5 billion in the facility since 2006 to support the production of low-enriched uranium.
The US capacity expansion is part of Urenco Global's broader strategy to install 4.6 million new SWU enrichment capacity at sites in the US, the Netherlands, and Germany over the next decade, according to the report.
