US commercial crude oil inventories increased by 2.5 million barrels to 407 mmbbls in the week ended July 31, the Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report on Wednesday.
Crude inventories were about 6% below the five-year average for this time of year, the EIA said.
The increase is in line with Macquarie's estimate of a 2.5-mmbbl build for the week ended July 31.
US Strategic Petroleum Reserve inventories dropped to 304.8 mmbbls in the week ended July 31, down from 307.7 mmbbls a week earlier, marking a weekly decline of 2.8 mmbbls, EIA data showed.
Crude oil input to refineries decreased by 183,000 barrels per day from the previous week to average about 17.2 million b/d in the week ended July 31. Crude oil production rose by 8,000 b/d to 13.8 million b/d.
Commercial crude imports increased by 515,000 b/d to average about 6.2 million b/d.
Total motor gasoline stockpiles decreased by 1.6 mmbbls from the previous week to 209.7 mmbbls, while distillate stocks dropped by 3.5 mmbbls to 107.2 mmbbls.
