US commercial crude oil inventories increased by 100,000 barrels to 428.9 mmbbls in the week ended Aug. 21, the Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report released Wednesday.
Crude inventories are 1% above the five-year average for this time of year, the EIA said.
The build is below Investing.com's estimate of 1.6 mmbbl for the week ended Aug 21.
US Strategic Petroleum Reserve inventories dropped to 289.7 mmbbls in the week ended Aug. 21, down from 293.4 mmbbls a week earlier, marking a weekly decline of 3.7 mmbbls, EIA data showed.
Crude oil input to refineries decreased by 1,000 barrels per day from the previous week to average about 17.4 million b/d in the week ended Aug. 21. Crude oil production rose by 13,000 b/d to 13.8 mmb/d.
Commercial crude imports decreased by 435,000 b/d to average about 6.2 mmb/d.
Total motor gasoline stockpiles dropped by 2.5 mmbbls from the previous week to 206.8 mmbbls, while distillate stocks declined by 2.2 mmbbls to 103.4 mmbbls.
