US crude oil inventories decreased by 7.9 million barrels to 445 mmbbls in the week ended May 15, the Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report on Wednesday.
Crude inventories are now about 2% below the five-year average for this time of year, the EIA said.
The decline exceeds a Macquarie forecast of a 3-mmbbl draw for the week ending May 15.
US Strategic Petroleum Reserve inventories fell to 374.2 mmbbls for the week ended May 15, down from 384.1 mmbbls a week ago, marking a weekly decline of 9.9 mmbbls, EIA data showed.
Crude oil input to refineries decreased by 80,000 barrels per day from the previous week to average about 16.3 mmb/d in the week ending May 15.
Crude oil production dropped by 8,000 b/d to 13.7 mmb/d. Commercial crude imports increased by 116,000 b/d to average about 6 mmb/d.
Total motor gasoline stockpiles decreased by 1.5 mmbbls from last week to 214.2 mmbbls, and distillate stocks increased by 400,000 b/d to 102.9 mmbbls, the agency said.
