Update: US Equity Futures Slightly Higher Pre-Bell as Oil Prices Drop Amid Optimism for Diplomacy in US-Iran Conflict

US equity futures were slightly higher pre-bell Tuesday as oil prices declined amid optimism that the US-Iran conflict could have a diplomatic resolution after a report that Iran was receptive to reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were 0.4% higher, S&P 500 futures were up 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures were flat.

Iran is ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days on the condition that the US removes its blockade on Iranian ports and reduces military pressure, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing a senior Iranian official.

In a move by the US to further increase economic pressure on Iran, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that all Iranian airlines will be shut down from Wednesday by denying them services such as refueling.

Traders digested the latest round of earnings, with AutoZone (AZO) posting higher fiscal Q4 net income and net sales.

Oil prices were lower, with front-month global benchmark North Sea Brent crude down 1.9% at $98.39 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude 2.6% lower at $93.30 per barrel.

The Richmond Fed manufacturing index for September is scheduled to be released at 10 am ET.

Federal Reserve New York President John Williams, Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson and Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin are slated to speak on Tuesday.

In other world markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended 0.2% higher, and China's Shanghai Composite finished 0.1% higher. Japan's Nikkei was closed for a public holiday. Meanwhile, the UK's FTSE 100 was up 0.1%, and Germany's DAX index was 0.5% higher in Europe's early afternoon session.

In equities, Alibaba (BABA) shares rose 3.1% after the company gave details about its latest Zhenwu V900 AI training and inference processor, which offers three times the performance of its predecessor. Shopify (SHOP) stock was up 7% after Chief Executive Tobias Lutke said in a post on social media platform X on Monday that the company will incorporate Meta Platforms' (META) Muse agentic AI into its checkout options.

On the losing side, stocks of Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and ConocoPhillips (COP) were down as part of a larger downswing in the energy sector as oil prices fell. Exxon Mobil shares dropped 1%, Chevron stock was down 1.1%, and ConocoPhillips shares declined 1.8%.
